What is history of Mother’s Day?

The modern Mother’s Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis as a day for each family to honor its mother, and it’s now celebrated on various days in many places around the world.

In 1907, Anna M. Jarvis, a Philadelphia schoolteacher, began a movement to set up a national Mother’s Day in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She solicited the help of hundreds of legislators and prominent businessmen to create a special day to honor mothers. The first Mother’s Day observance was a church service honoring Anna’s mother. Anna handed out her mother’s favorite flowers, the white carnations, on the occasion as they represent sweetness, purity, and patience. Anna’s hard work finally paid off in the year 1914, when proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers.

Why do we choose carnations for Mother’s Day?

A simple answer is that carnations have been traditionally associated with this day on which mothers are honored. Then according to a legend, this association goes back to the passion of the Christ. Seeing Christ’s sufferings, his mother Mary shed tears, which fell on the ground. These tears are supposed to have turned into the fragrant and beautiful carnations.

What Different Colors of Carnations Signify?

In general, carnations convey love, purity, and admiration. Among carnations of different colors, There are different meaning associated with carnations of different colors.

Light red carnations express admiration.

Dark red symbolizes great love and affection.

White carnations indicate purity, love, peace, tranquility, and good fortune.

Pink carnations spefically stand for always on my mind.

Red and pink carnations are meant to honor a mother who is alive and white carnations are used to honor a mother who is dead.
